Re sound mods: If you overwrite a mother class, it will hand those changes throug to its children. In your case, if you change the sounds of the M4 and the child classes M4A1 and M4AIM DO NOT CHANGE THE VALUE (sound[]) AND/OR ITS CLASS (Single/Burst/FullAuto) you'll have the sounds in there without touching them.
Another example: If you e.g. set the M113 to scope 1, all subclasses (afaik Vulcan and the RACS versions) will be hidden -- if they do not define their scope themself.
